Adult Protective Services/Adult Services

What are Adult Protective Services (APS)?

An Adult Services Worker, receiving a report or complaint about a suspicion or a risk of abuse, neglect or exploitation of an adult, investigates the report, determines whether services are needed and helps find the necessary services to stop or prevent the abuse, neglect or exploitation from recurring. Adult Protective Services are provided, regardless of the person’s income or financial resources. Adult Protective Services include:

  • The receipt and investigation of reports that an adult is abused, neglected, or exploited or at risk of abuse, neglect, or exploitation.
  • The provision of a wide variety of health, social, and legal services to stop the mistreatment and prevent further mistreatment.

If you have questions about the situation of an elderly person or adult with disabilities, please call and talk to an Adult Services Worker at 540-422-8400. You may also call the 24-hour, toll-free hotline at 1-888-832-3858.

Who can receive Adult Protective Services (APS)?

Anyone living in Fauquier County who is 60 years or older or who is incapacitated and 18 years of age or older may receive protective services if services are needed.

Where does APS investigate?

APS completes investigations in almost every setting including the home, assisted living facilities, nursing facilities, and hospitals. APS does not investigate allegations of mistreatment in jails or prisons.

If no one is harming a person, can they still qualify for APS if they are not able to take care of him/herself adequately?

Yes, anyone who meets the criteria above can receive protective services. There is a definition called “self-neglect” to describe the situation of someone who needs help to make safe decisions or arrangements for care.

Can APS make someone accept services they do not want?

Crack bắn cá ăn xu 2019No. If an adult has the capacity to make decisions, then APS cannot require her to do something she does not want to do. Only a Court can decide whether someone does not have the capacity to make safe decisions. If the Court makes that determination, then a Guardian is appointed for the person, but only as a last resort.
